A small man, of Halfling descent, knelt at a freshly dug hole in one of the many burial mounds in the clearing outside of the village of Ancient's Rest in the Circe Woods. Two of the village guards, a Danu with fine, lavender-gray fur, and a Dwarf stood near by telling him to get away from the grave site. He was ignoring them, given their reluctance to tread upon the mound this was working out quite nicely.

Ashy Claye ran his fingers through his gray hair, he wasn't old just altered by having died during his training. There were less obvious results to him having stepped onto the shores of the 'other side' as well. Sighing he examined what wasn't missing from the grave- i.e. the bones that remained. These mounds were so ancient that most everything had returned to nature so it was a safe guess that whatever it was that had been removed was enchanted in some way. That was the only way something could survive any length of time six feet deep.

“You can stop trying to lecture me, you're starting to become annoying as background sound.” He said in the general direction of the guards.

“Do you want to end up in the cell?” The Danu snapped at him.

“I am Death Priest,” Ashy rustled his robes, all of his clothing was some shade of gray, “I belong here more than anyone, besides someone needs to fill in this hole and perform Rites. Do you know them?” He said in a tone that made it clear any conversation would be perceived as tedious.

“You should have announced yourself.” The Dwarf huffed.

“You should have used your skills of perception and figured it out.” He snapped back, the Dwarf clicked their tongue. “Do you know who this grave belongs to?”

“Uh, if memory serves, that is the grave of Torg Geon the Exorcist and their partner Eines Keil who was a local priest.” The Danu answered.

“There are three people buried here, did they have dear friend?” Ashy asked without looking away from the crudely dug hole.

“That'd have to be their constant companion Carver Hast.” The Dwarf answered.

“I see, whoever dug this spot up was after something that belonged to the Goblinoid of this group. Any idea what that might have been?” Ashy asked.

“That would be Torg... can't think of anything they would have been buried with that wouldn't have decomposed by now. Eines had an enchanted staff but our current priest, Emmi, has that at the temple.” The Danu pointed out.

“Could one of you fetch them for me, I have questions they will probably have the most complete answers to, I need to attend to this grave now.” Ashy sat down, cross-legged and began to meditate with his eyes closed, truthfully he was feeling out for anything enchanted in the grave. Wouldn't be the first time that a reproduction was given to the local priest so the actual item could be buried with it's owner. In this position the sunlight hit his face, showing his plain features and alabaster pale skin. Interestingly he didn't feel any restless spirits in the area. It would seem these three had truly moved on when they died. That was good.

The Dwarf headed out, the sound of their have foot falls and clicking mail faded off in the distance.

“What exactly do Death Priests do?” The Danu asked.

“What is your name?” He did not open his eyes.

“Ivy Vine.” She answered.

“We insure the peaceful rest of the dead attending to funeral rites, protecting burial grounds, and help the grieving. Some of us travel to measure the balance of the world.” He explained. “I put the dead who have been awoken back to rest and purge those who try to enslave them.”

“So you're a warrior?” Ivy asked.

“Not unless I have to be. My preference is peace.” He concluded his magical search, fairly certain this Danu, a mortal offshoot of the Fae, had felt his exploration of the grave. He sat up on his knees and started to fill in the hole with his hands.
“I've heard that the dead can be raised if enough magic concentrates naturally where they died, is that true?” The Danu asked.

“It is, it is very rare thankfully. If there is an abundance of death it can draw in and collect energy leading to undead creatures being more common there, battlefields not properly attended to and cleansed at a good example of this. Places where famine or illness killed many also have this tendency. These woods are very safe, no major conflicts or death counts.

A knight in all dark carved full plated armor walked into a rather particular sleep town called Ancient's Rest. Fitting name considering why she had come here in the first place. She noted a dwarf looking a bit miffed walking towards somewhere with a purpose. The rest of the town seemed more laid back even if on edge or was it leery? Could be both depending on what they had seen or believed.

Not long ago her lord had reached out to her seeking aide for a friend. She of course answered the summons and was given the details by a closer lord. Trade had slowed down to nothing through this area. Rumors were that people were different or werent leaving at all and of course who he had sent to investigate hadn't come back either. It was right up her ally with being a knight and a shadow blade, not that anyone need to know about her work as a shadow. That was one of Kai's many little secrets.

So now here she was walking with no real purpose but to take in what she saw. This or how she looked seemed to have caught the attention of the grumbling dwarf.

"You are a knight correct?" The dwarf asked with some irritation to their voice, and yet their eyes seem to be looking for help or a fight.

"I am, sent by a local lord." Kailani finding it best to only given the bare basics of what was needed in conversations.

They pointed back in a direction, "We need help with someone disturbing a grave. Would you go help my companion?" Their gaze suggested that this was the source of their irritation.

The knight gave a mere nod as her dark blue plume fell forward somewhat over her shoulder. She then began walking with a bit more purpose in the general direction given. It certainly didn't take much to find what the dwarf had been talking about. The black armored knight silently, walked up to the site listening and observing.

"Though plants do have a tendency to disrupt that chain of facts. However..." She pointed to a local flower that was growing near the grave. "Certain plants can also keep things naturally cleansed as long as order is maintained, which the death priest here is doing. Unless you truly want which he is talking about to happen, I would highly suggest letting him finish what he has started." It certainly was a bit of a stretch on the truth of things in the dead coming back to life in this case, but what the halfing before her was doing was needed.

Her eyes continued to monitor the halfling and what he was doing, making sure that she just happened opened her mouth and defended the wrong person. However he seemed rather capable from what she could see.

"Is this apart of why people are being reported different and unable to leave?" She asked as her gazed now looked to the Danu so they knew she was speaking to them.

"It happened after the rumors started so its quite probable, good Lady Knight." Ashy answered his question, glad that this newcomer had backed him up. that would make things easier for him, at least until she got annoyed with him. Everyone always did. "Is it safe to assume you've been sent to deal with whatever fiend the rumors say is enchanting people?"

Ashy was aware that he was dealing almost exclusively with women and it was a welcome change from the usual male riff raff he had to deal with. Men tended to protect their egos too much, made them rather touchy.
Ashy finished filling in the hole and cast the quick set of spells that composed the usual Rites for graves plus a few of his favorites.
The Air around him glowed with pale greens and blues as the magic pulsed through the area. As the light subsided he yawned, more out of boredom than anything else. After fighting necromancers and the like this was rather dull, foundational and practical though.
"Wow, I've never seen a Death Priest in action before. Impressive." The Danu said. "I'm Guard Ivy Vine, Lady Knight." She introduced herself to the heavily armored now standing beside her

Kai inclined her head, causing her plume to fall completely over her shoulder. "I am here to sort out the rumors. Though as to any answers, I have none as I have only just arrived."

She then watched as he did everything one could for a grave except one simple thing that usually only a shaman could do. However, before she could do so her attention was pulled towards the Danu. "I am Dame Kahukoa. Thank you for your introduction. Excuse me Guard Vine."

The knight stepped forward to just the edge of the grave and made sure the death priest was no longer on the soil before she put her gloved fingers to the ground. A pattern of runes across her armor gave a distinct low glow as she allowed natures balance and peace to reign through the soil once more so that more of the flowers of good could grow through the area. It was always best when the plants chose to eat the negative energy to expel it into something neutral or good. like an earth purifier.

Kailani stood back up and looked between the two before her gaze settled upon the death priest. "I apologize, please do not take my actions as anything other than good will."

Now she looked to the guard. "I need to have a comprehensive understanding of what is happening here in town so that I might know what needs to be done or relayed to the local lord."

"No need to apologize, this is obviously why you wre sent to investigate. That'll be Mayor Allo, be prepared for a literal bear hug." Ashy informed the knight.
"How do you know that?" Ivy seemed off put by his knowledge of the village.
"I've been watching the village for a couple days now. Didn't see who dug up the mound though." Ashy had been on the far side of the village at the time. Most of the population was at the tavern for a meeting.
"When Gemma gets back with the priest I'll go get the Mayor." Ivy didn't like that he'd been here so long without being noticed or announcing himself so there was a little growl to her voice.

Kailani quirked an eyebrow that no-one could see. This death priest seemed to have some sort of background to be in the shadows to observe and be only where needed. Intriguing indeed. "If you would prefer, I can keep the priest company while you and your partner retrieve who we both seek to inquire with." A suggestion to alleviate the need to repeat things between two people and make the guard feel at ease, even if Kai felt the priest more trustworthy than most.

Where the others saw something upsetting, she saw respect and reverie. Her eyes shifted to look around taking in the towns people and how they were with the situation or just things in general, it was always good to observe and understand, the death priest seemed to have a good grasp of that already and to be honest she wanted to converse with him about what he saw without alienating the people who called this place home.

"No offense but I'm not leaving either of you alone right now. Too much weirdness lately. I'll go when Gemma returns with Priest Emmi. Or we can all go to see the mayor together after that." Ivy Vines said, shifting her footing a little, she had conviction in her words but she also seemed to think she sounded silly.
"Fair enough, I think the latter option is the optimal one. Afterward accommodations may be needed after that conversation." Ashy stretched and relaxed internally, his senses never ended their constant probing of the area around them. Oddly nothing had felt odd or disrupted despite a grave having been dug up. Whatever it was affecting this area didn't seem overtly evil, perhaps it was taking its time but that was very interesting to him.
Hopefully this shamanistic knight didn't rush to conclusions, didn't appear to be her style and she didn't strike him as lazy either. Perhaps this was fortuitous, he would meditate on this whole thing tonight. There was a lot happening before them, behind the two woman he saw Gemma and Priest Emmi in the distance as they approached.

There would have been a shrug, but it was rather unbecoming of a knight. "No offense taken, we are mere strangers to you." Her stance still as she listened to Ashy. "I would be inclined to agree with you on that Death Priest." Having noticed the way he looked she shifted her body to be able to see what might hold his attention, and it was then she noticed the other guard one more and someone else, probably this Priest Emmi.

She let her senses out, a slight flare of a couple runes before they returned to normal as she let her shaman nature through. her eyes could see things now that most couldn't see. There was nothing to note of necrotic energy, but there was a note of divine. In fact... her eyes scanned along the edge of the trees and further, there was a concentration in pathways. That was odd. as the Priest joined them, she let her eyesight drop.

"Welcome, it seems unfortunate but as the Death Priest pointed out it would be better if we discussed things with the mayor as well so we would be all on the same page. I apologize for the lack of organization, but it does tend to happen in such matters from time to time." Kailani gave an incline of her head as a way of greeting.

Ashy left the mound and joined the others to wait for Gemma and the priest to arrive. The Knight had used their divine senses, he had seen the light in her eyes and felt the energy expand outward. Part of him wondered what she saw when she looked through him, perhaps that was a question for another time.
"Priest Emerald Skal." Ashy bowed to the holy man. They were of the reptilian Nagan people. "A pleasure to meet you, I am Ashy Claye of Lior." He introduced himself, his eyes drifting off as he spoke.
"I prefer Emmi, and it is an honor to meet you." They returned the bow. "You don't look like a typical Death Priest." They observed.
"I am not a typical Death Priest." Ashy smirked, he'd been told that his smirk was unsettling, possibly because of his vacant eyes. "I assume you are aware of the circumstances that brought myself and this Lady Knight to your village."
"I am, I fear that I am very out of my depth on this." The Priest admitted.
"To be fair to you, Emmi, this is an unusual situation." Ashy pointed out. He wondered what the shamanistic knight thought about all of this, himself included.

Gemma was focused on him, it was interesting how she found him threatening, when her counterpart seemed to feel the same way about the knight. Emmi was just happy to have reinforcements, which was understandable. Shifting his weight the rings hanging on the circular head of his staff clicked and jingled slightly. It was the only sound he had made so far. Emmi took note of his staff for the first time and seemed quite interested in it.

Kailani was used to being the one that blended into the background despite her appearance. She looked like an old and worn suit of armor with a blue plume that tended to blend into most things. It wasn't until the runes lit up or when she fought that she was truly noted. But that was fine by any of her own standards.

Her attention turned to the two guards still standing there. "When can we expect the Mayor?" She said so as to move things along. "Unless we are all traveling to them?" She questioned. Her eyes searching even though no-one could really see it.

She was curious enough to do some looking later, she felt like the divine energy paths were a good lead but first there was the matter of introductions, everyone else's perspectives on what was happening. The cordial and needed path, despite her nature telling her to follow the flow. Feel the path before you and pass through unseen. Her training warring with her duties as a knight. Sometimes it really was like this. But for now she held herself still waiting for instructions.

"The mayor does her rounds soon, we can meet them on their path. On the other side of that hill." Ashy pointed out.
"How do you know that?" Gemma asked.
"They go for a walk everyday." The Halfling shrugged. "Shall we?" He gestured to his right, north-ish, without looking before heading in that direction.
"Hey! Hold up!" Gemma went after him, he was much faster than she had anticipated.
"May as well go after them." Ivy sighed.
"I think we should, before Gemma arrests him. I know Death Priests are usually a bit odd... but your friend is quite unusual." Emmi addressed Kailani, his demeanor was friendly but unsure of himself in this particularly moment. His slit pupilled eyes trying to get a read on the person behind the helm.
"Stop, dammit!" Gemma hollered after Ashy as she tried to catch up with him, alas he'd gotten to the hill with some distance on her so she was losing ground quickly.
